IMPORTANCE OF MANGO PEEL

Mangos contain 7% - 24% peel. Mango peels therefore are an important by-product from Mango pulp industry. At present they are not only unutilized but are also considered as nuisance and a source of pollution. It costs to get rid of it. Ironically,it is potentially a very important raw material. It is a good source of anti-oxidants, polyphenols, anthocyanin and carotenoids. It can be used in nutraceutical and functional foods. In other words Manfo peel is a good source of phenolic compounds and high quality pectin. So for grape seeds and green tea are important sources of antioxidents but now if this Mangopeel is utilized, it will become a very important source of antioxidants. World production of pectin is estimated to be about 1,00,000 M.T. per year and consumption is increasing at about 4% per year.

USES OF MANGO PEEL

Pectin is widely used as a gelling agents in jams, confectionary, and bakery fillings, in stabilisers of yoghurts and milk drinks. So for it is being produced from Citrus peels and other sources. Mango peel pectin is comparable in quality and therefore very important additional source to get pectin. Mango peel powder incorporated into soft dough biscuits increased SDF(Soluble Dietary Fibre) content, polyphenols and carotenoids. Mango peels have recently been shown as a favourable source of high quality Dietary Fabre and natural anti-oxidant source due to :
# high starch content     # high cellulose content    # high hemicellulose content    # high lignin content    # high pectin content (56-66 %)    # low lipid content    # Higher overall fibre content     # greater SDF to IDF ratio     # water and fat holding capacity     # lower metabolic energy value     # Phytic acid content     # Bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids
In food systems and human health, antioxidants function to reduce oxidative reactions by scavenging and eliminating free radicals. Oxidative reactions have deleterious effects on food products, and adverse health effects such as implications in cancer, atherosclerosis and diabetes. Consuming more antioxidant-rich food may help protect against cellular damage and the aid in the prevention of chronic disease development. Synthetic antioxidant compounds have some side effects and are carcinogenic. Natural antioxidants present in foods are safe and very important. Chittoor District in A.P. India and its neighboring district has worlds largest concentration of Mango processing units. More then a hundred units Within 200 kilometers around chitoor can process 3 million M.T of mangoes every year. This is an unique opportunity for anyone interested in setting up a Mango Peel Pectin manufacturing unit.

PROPOSAL

This industry if setup in Chittoor District can obtain 1,50,000 M.T. of Mango peel with a potential to manufacture about 15000-20000 M.T of mango pectin.
