Potassium Super Absorbent Polymer called KSAP absorbs and retains water few hundreds of times its own weight. SAP prevents evaporation losses of 10-15% and prevents percolation losses which are 50-60%.

Plant roots extend only up to 30-75 cms. Therefore, they can absorb water only if it is available within their reach. In soil, water percolates down beyond their reach within 3 days for plants. That means hardly 20%-25% can only be utilised by them before the water is lost due to percolation beyond the reach of their roots. This rate of percolation depends on soil type. But SAP will be very useful in case of regular farming in any soil. It holds water in the form of gel and all of it will be within the reach of roots so that 100% of water is made available to plants. This way 60% or more water is saved. This means if SAP is used, one watering will be enough where three are needed without SAP.


HOW TO APPLY KSAP FOR DRY LAND FARMING?


For dryland cultivation,generally furrow / ridge cultivation is not adopted. Most popular system is to consider the entire plot as one unit and seedling is done at the time of ploughing itself. The entire plot is levelled and when rains come, the entire plot gets water uniformly. When rains fail,it is watered with sprinklers or rain guns. In any case, regularity is important to get good crop.
Using SAP will ensure continuous availability of water to the plant. But this application of SAP has to be done well. Simplest method would be to mix the KSAP with soil (0.3% KSAP+ 99.70% Soil) and spread it all over the farm and then cover it with another 20 - 30 cms of soil. When water is given or rain falls, the entire farm will retain water in the form of gel. We have to ensure that the KSAP is not directly exposed to hot and dry weather to minimze water losses. This will be best for the first crop but to ensure effectiveness for next crop, care should be taken not to disturb the KSAP mix.
Another method is using ridges and furrows. Furrows should be made 30-50 cms deeper. KSAP can be hydrated ( pour it in water and prepare gel) and this gel is mixed with soil (50% Hydrated KSAP+50% Soil) and pour it at bottom (upto 20 cms high)and cover it with 20 cms soil.
